Networking isn’t an activity that can only happen at formal business events. After all, networking is nothing more than creating conversations that build relationships (both professional and personal). If you have the proper mindset, you can network anywhere. Here are seven ways to prepare yourself to network wherever you are.
1. Prepare. Don’t leave the office (or your home!) without business cards or any other key information you need to do business. Keep a kit ready in your car or briefcase so that you can easily share your information with someone if asked. And don’t forget mental preparation. Have a clear value proposition and be aware of timely news events or trends that make what you do relevant and interesting to others.
2. Unplug. Have you noticed how many people have their ears glued to mobile phones or wired to ipods while they’re out? Don’t be one of them. In order to meet people, you must appear open and approachable. You’re much more likely to have a good encounter if your ears are free.
3. Smile. Yes, everyone gives this advice…because it works. The essence of networking is starting conversations that help you build relationships. And that’s much easier to do when you smile.
4. Pay Compliments. Cultivate the habit of paying sincere compliments daily. They’re great conversation starters that also get you in the habit of speaking to strangers. Even if you don’t build a business relationship, you’ve just brightened someone’s day. (This technique is particularly helpful if you’re working to overcome shyness.)
5. Provide Value. During every conversation, listen for opportunities to provide value. Can you make a helpful introduction? Do you have a useful resource to share? Can you provide information that will help your listener? Shifting your attention to how you can help instead of how you can benefit will build your personal network faster than almost anything else.
6. Use Good Transitions. You’re in a social situation. How do you bring up business? Be prepared to make a smooth transition to mention your business, if warranted. A simple statement like, “I see that all the time in my line of work. That’s why…” lets you steer the conversation without derailing it.
7. Schedule next steps. Congratulations! If you’ve met someone who has a genuine need for the value that you offer, get permission to talk again later. Have a conversation closer ready like, “Let’s schedule a time when we can talk about this in more detail.” Moving to the next step guarantees that you’ll build on your relationship and lets you end on a high note.
You never know where your next great business opportunity will come from. Be alert to networking situations all around you and use these 7 tips so you’ll be prepared to make the most of them. Happy networking.
